Joanna Burden is the woman on whose property Christmas and Burch have been living. She happens to be a descendant of Yankee abolitionists who are still hated by the citizens of Jefferson. Joanna Burden is murdered. Burch happens to be present at the scene of the crime, and consequently he is arrested. Burch discloses that Christmas was romantically involved with Joanna Burden and he is part black. He wants to imply that Christmas is guilty of her murder. Burch is detained in the jail. He has to wait until he gets his reward for turning in Christmas.
